The parts of a birth chart, one by one
A chart looks like a wheel full of hieroglyphs. It decomposes into four kinds of parts, and each is simple on its own.
Planets: the what
The planets are the actors. Each stands for a function of life, and the tradition's assignments are stable across centuries: the sun for identity and vitality, the moon for feeling and habit, Mercury for thought and speech, Venus for love and pleasure, Mars for energy and aggression, Jupiter for growth and luck, Saturn for structure, work and limits. The outer three — Uranus, Neptune, Pluto — arrived with telescopes and were folded in as generational forces: disruption, dissolution, transformation.
Signs: the how
A planet sits in a sign, and the sign colours how the function behaves. Mars in Aries is direct heat; Mars in Libra picks its battles and resents having to. Signs sort by element — fire, earth, air, water — and by mode: cardinal signs start things, fixed signs sustain them, mutable signs adapt them.
Houses: the where
The twelve houses tie the sky to a life. The same Venus reads differently in the second house (money, possessions) than the seventh (marriage and open partnership). Houses depend on birth time — which is why astrologers nag about the minute on the birth certificate; without it, half the chart's specificity is gone.
Aspects: the plot
Aspects are angles between planets. Conjunctions fuse two functions, trines and sextiles let them cooperate, squares and oppositions set them against each other. Astrologers read a chart's tensions almost entirely from its hard aspects — in practice the squares are where the biography is.
How a reading is built
A competent reading is synthesis, not lookup. The astrologer weighs the sun, moon and rising sign as the frame, then asks which planets are strongest — angular, tightly aspected, or ruling the chart — and lets those dominate the story. The failure mode of beginner astrology is reading each placement off a menu, one paragraph per planet, with no attempt to reconcile them. The failure mode of computed reports is the same thing, automated.
