Sun signs and moon signs: the pair that does the work
If the chart had to be compressed to two placements, every astrologer would keep these two.
The sun and moon are astrology's two great lights, and the tradition gives them the two halves of a person. The sun is the conscious self: what you are building, what you identify with, where your vitality goes. The moon is the instinctive self: how you feel, what soothes you, how you react before you have time to decide to react.
The distinction matters because the two often pull in different directions, and the pull is the personality. A Capricorn sun with a Pisces moon is ambition wrapped around softness — the executive who cries in the car. A Leo sun with a Virgo moon performs confidently and privately audits every performance. Same-sign pairs (a Taurus sun with a Taurus moon) read as unusually consistent people — what you see is what they feel.
Twelve moons, briefly
Sun-sign descriptions are everywhere, so here is the other half. The moon in:
- Aries — feelings arrive fast and burn off fast; anger is clean, sulking is rare.
- Taurus — steady, comfort-seeking, slow to change emotional course. Traditionally the moon's happiest placement.
- Gemini — feelings become words almost instantly; talking is processing.
- Cancer — deep, tidal, protective; the moon rules Cancer and runs at full strength here.
- Leo — feelings want witnesses; warmth and drama travel together.
- Virgo — emotion routed through usefulness; cares by fixing.
- Libra — needs harmony to feel settled; conflict is physically uncomfortable.
- Scorpio — intense, private, all-or-nothing attachments.
- Sagittarius — feelings need open air; freedom is emotional oxygen.
- Capricorn — contained, dutiful, uneasy with being comforted.
- Aquarius — feelings observed from one step away; kindness without engulfment.
- Pisces — porous, empathic, absorbs the room's weather.
To place your own moon you need your birth date and, because the moon changes sign about every two and a half days, sometimes the time too — the same data any chart calculator asks for.
